DUBAI, U.A.E.,22nd April 2009 - Emirates and York Racecourse today announced a sponsorship agreement through which the award-winning international airline has commited to a further three years as title sponsor of the Yorkshire Cup.
Emirates has been the title sponsor of this famous horse racing event on a rolling basis, but this is the first time that the airline has pledged a long-term commitment to the Group Two race.

Salem Obaidalla, Emirates’ Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations - Europe and Russian Federation, said: “Emirates has a great affinity with horse racing and it was very important for the airline to commit its support for this traditional race day. Racing at York has gone from strength to strength over the years and Emirates is proud of its association with the Yorkshire Cup.”
The Emirates Airline Yorkshire Cup will take place on Friday 15th May and has attracted a strong list of entries. High-profile names entered include the greatest stayer of recent years in Yeats, the recent Dubai Sheema Classic runner-up Spanish Moon, and last year’s Emirates Airline Yorkshire Cup winner Geordieland.
The Godolphin stable, also supported by Emirates, always merit respect, but especially in this event, which they have tasted great success in over the years. Since 1995 the Dubai operation has won five of the last 14 runnings and the stable has made four entries, including the Group 1-placed and improving Veracity and All The Good, winner of the Caulfield Cup, Godolphin’s first Group 1 winner in Australia.
Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford said: “The Emirates Airline Yorkshire Cup on May 15th has always been one of our favourite fixtures on the racing calendar and with the talented line up on show, it’s set to be an exciting day.
“We know how much horseracing means to Emirates due to their extensive association with the sport and Godolphin is proud to be sponsored by the multi award winning airline.”
York’s chief executive William Derby added: “We are delighted to have Emirates back to support the feature race on the final day of the Dante Festival. With prize money of £140,000 the Emirates Airline Yorkshire Cup is the highest rated and most valuable race of its type and heralds the other major Cup races. It is particularly pleasing to be able to extend our fabulous relationship with Emirates for a further three years, and we are looking forward to developing the event even more given the backing of this international brand.”
