Should mobile phones be banned on planes?

By Georgia MuirMSN NZ Travel writer
Isn't an international flight tough enough without being forced to hear someone blabbing on their mobile phone?
Imagine this: you're buckled in and bound for London and your neurotic neighbour spends three hours on the phone in a heated family domestic, another two hours expressing a long-winded farewell to their partner and another hour booking last-minute accommodation for their holiday. It would be excruciatingly painful to overhear!
This phone phenomenon may be aggravating, but it isn't new. Handset phones have been available on planes for years, but they haven't been very popular due to the extortionate cost of making a call and the fact that you are restricted to your seat if you do.
However, in the last few years technology has progressed in leaps and bounds, costs have been slashed significantly and we are now at a point where we can access mobile phone global roaming in some regions of the world while 10km above ground.
Take the European Union for example. After EU airline regulators confirmed there were no safety implications of allowing mobile phone usage on carriers, airlines like Emirates and Ryan Air allowed passengers to use their mobiles mid-flight. If the demand proves to be there, other airlines are likely to follow their lead.
But do passengers actually want this option?
Sure, having access to your mobile is an effective time waster — you could catch up on news headlines, reply to all of your outstanding e-mails or call someone you forgot to say goodbye to.
But where do you draw the line? What is a fair compromise between passengers having free reign on their phones and banning them altogether?
Pros of banning phones
NoiseWhether it be to contest reception interference or to simply prove their point, people always raise their voice a few decibels when they talk on the phone.
Taking a break from being contactableIs it really necessary to be contactable 24/7? We are already bombarded with so many e-mails, text messages and social networks that surely taking away these means of communication for 24 hours at the most isn't denying us our lifeline.
Keeping the peaceIf the people around you aren't annoying enough — slurping coffee, hogging the armrest and snoring sporadically — then using a mobile phone is likely to tip boiling point. "Air rage" could be the new road rage.
Keeping private matters just thatShouldn't everyone have the right not to be subjected to other people's lives? At least on a train or bus you can simply project a contemptuous sneer and disembark if it gets too much.
Pros of having free reign on your handset
An effective time wasterWhat a great way to while away a 24-hour flight! Instead of anxiously pacing up and down the aisle you can pay bills, catch up with an old friend or organise a lift from the airport.
Making life easy for the forgetfulWouldn't it be great to do all the things that slipped your mind on the rush to the airport? Booking accommodation, organising travel insurance, transferring money or conning someone into feeding the cat! No matter how prepared you are there is always something you forget.
SafetyFor those with a phobia of flying, having access to a mobile phone may make them feel safer.
So, looking at the pros and cons, what do you think? Is allowing mobile phone use a form of noise pollution or a passenger right? Have your say below.

Emirates Airline Reins in Another Three Years of the Yorkshire Cup
23 April, 2009
DUBAI, U.A.E.,22nd April 2009 - Emirates and York Racecourse today announced a sponsorship agreement through which the award-winning international airline has commited to a further three years as title sponsor of the Yorkshire Cup.
Emirates has been the title sponsor of this famous horse racing event on a rolling basis, but this is the first time that the airline has pledged a long-term commitment to the Group Two race.

Salem Obaidalla, Emirates’ Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations - Europe and Russian Federation, said: “Emirates has a great affinity with horse racing and it was very important for the airline to commit its support for this traditional race day. Racing at York has gone from strength to strength over the years and Emirates is proud of its association with the Yorkshire Cup.”
The Emirates Airline Yorkshire Cup will take place on Friday 15th May and has attracted a strong list of entries. High-profile names entered include the greatest stayer of recent years in Yeats, the recent Dubai Sheema Classic runner-up Spanish Moon, and last year’s Emirates Airline Yorkshire Cup winner Geordieland.
The Godolphin stable, also supported by Emirates, always merit respect, but especially in this event, which they have tasted great success in over the years. Since 1995 the Dubai operation has won five of the last 14 runnings and the stable has made four entries, including the Group 1-placed and improving Veracity and All The Good, winner of the Caulfield Cup, Godolphin’s first Group 1 winner in Australia.
Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford said: “The Emirates Airline Yorkshire Cup on May 15th has always been one of our favourite fixtures on the racing calendar and with the talented line up on show, it’s set to be an exciting day.
“We know how much horseracing means to Emirates due to their extensive association with the sport and Godolphin is proud to be sponsored by the multi award winning airline.”
York’s chief executive William Derby added: “We are delighted to have Emirates back to support the feature race on the final day of the Dante Festival. With prize money of £140,000 the Emirates Airline Yorkshire Cup is the highest rated and most valuable race of its type and heralds the other major Cup races. It is particularly pleasing to be able to extend our fabulous relationship with Emirates for a further three years, and we are looking forward to developing the event even more given the backing of this international brand.”

The world's top airlines

1. Singapore Airlines No stranger to awards, Singapore Airlines snatched the overall Airline of the Year title for the quality of both its economy and premium class services. From top-notch food to friendly flight attendants, any long-haul flight on this airline, which flies more passengers every year than the entire population of Singapore, is bound to be a pleasurable experience.

2. Thai Airways Jumping up from fourth position in 2006, Thai Airways came in second place overall. Famous for its in-flight service and well-dressed cabin crew, the airline also won the Best First Class Lounge award for its lounge at Bangkok Airport which includes a Royal Spa complete with sauna and yoga classes. Oh to travel first class!
Website: http://www.thaiair.com/
3. Cathay Pacific A former title winner, Cathay Pacific performed well overall ranking in the top four or five positions in almost every section of the survey. The flagship carrier of Hong Kong is also one of only six airlines worldwide to carry Skytrax's prestigious five-star rating.
Website: http://www.cathaypacific.com/
4. Qatar Airways A relative newcomer, Doha-based Qatar Airways has drawn plenty of attention for its international service. While economy class passengers are treated to excellent in-flight service, with the airline taking out the Best First Class Airline tag, it's the first class passengers who, as usual, remain king.
Website: http://www.qatarairways.com/
5. Qantas Long celebrated for its exceptional flight safety record, Qantas has dropped from second place in 2006 to fifth place. Australia's leading airline, however, consistently performs well and its budget domestic carrier, Jetstar, was named the World's Best Low-Cost Airline.
Website: http://www.qantas.com.au/
6. Malaysia Airlines Moving up three places from the previous year, Kuala Lumpur-based Malaysia Airlines also regained its crown for the world's Best Cabin Staff Award, snatched away by Thai Airways in 2006. Along with Cathy Pacific, it is one of only six airlines worldwide to hold Skytrax's five-star rating.
Website: http://www.malaysiaairlines.com/
7. Air New Zealand At last, New Zealand's flagship carrier has finally nudged its way into Skytrax's top 10. Long recognised locally for its quality passenger service, it's good to see this Kiwi icon taking on the world's best.
Website: http://www.airnewzealand.com/
8. China Airlines A surprising addition to this list is state-owned China Airlines, which in fact moved up two places from 2006. With its base in Taiwan not China, because of political tensions, passengers to and from mainland China must fly through a third port.
Website: http://www.china-airlines.com/
9. Emirates Consistently cited as one of the world's best airlines, Emirates is the largest Middle Eastern Airline. Based in Dubai, most of its flight attendants are recruited from overseas.
Website: http://www.emirates.com/
10. British Airways Relying too heavily on past reputation, British Airways has slipped from its first place ranking in 2006 all the way down to 10th position. The founding member of the Oneworld travel alliance obviously needs to lift its game if it wants to regain the top spot.
